Anthropic AI list of stolen books
US AI company, Anthropic, used a large number of digital books taken from an illegal site to train its AI models. A searchable works list has now been released to identify the authors’ works that taken.

Following a court case in the US where the judge ruled that Anthropic’s use of up to seven million pirated books for training was illegal, the company wren ordered to set up a compensation scheme for rights holders affected, and so authors can now file a claim via the Settlement website.
The case was a class action suit brought by authors against the company, and has been seen as a positive step in the challenge of AI developers using creators’ work for free for training their generative AI models. The settlement is being administered by a settlement administrator and their website includes a comprehensive FAQ section and Important Documents page.
The Society of Authors, who AOI work closely with on rights campaigning, have details how authors can look into whether their works may be included in the settlement case. Go here for more information.
