The tactile nature and organic feel of materials such as paper and card, ceramics and textiles, maintain the connection these have always had with human made artefacts, and hold a recognisable appeal as the basis for illustrations.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

AOI members had the exclusive opportunity to explore these aspects by taking part in one of the four online sessions for the Handmade Illustration Season Creative Practice Course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our presenters are highly experienced illustrators creating artwork with a range of materials, combining ceramics with illustration, sculpting paper for a range of clients, making collaged images for publishing and forming textile pieces with a focus on research and exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Creative Practice Course is hosted by illustrator Dave Bain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each session gave members the opportunity to respond to one of two briefs set by the session illustrator. We encouraged members to make up to 3 rough ideas from the brief to bring along to the session where they were able to discuss their ideas with fellow illustrators in an informal setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 1: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Constructing with Paper: with Helen Friel<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

From the simple to the complex, paper sculpture artwork is effective in forming images with depth which also intrigue as to how they were created. Commissioned by brands to add a different dimension, Helen Friel covered a range of projects, discussing some of the challenges and pleasure of working in this familiar medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A paper engineer with fifteen years of experience art directing and creating paper artwork for editorial and advertising clients, Helen also authors and illustrates interactive and immersive books for both children and adults, including Midnight Creatures<\/em>, Hoakes Island <\/em>and Mystery at the Met<\/em>. Alongside her creative practice, she teaches BA Illustration at Falmouth University<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 2:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Combining Ceramics with Illustration with Taili Wu aka Monstershaper<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the strength of ceramics as a medium to illustrate people, their relationships and environments. Taili<\/a> discusses how she artfully crafts elements built from ceramics, sometimes combining these to great effect with flat, 2D illustrations and digital drawings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in the countryside of Taichung, Taiwan, Taili Wu has a passion for handmade touch and playful things, and as an illustrator and artist she draws inspiration from animals, daily objects, and folk toys. She is passionate about sharing stories with a sense of humour, creating work that sparks imagination and curiosity. Winner of the 2025 Northern Illustration Prize established illustrator category, Taili also makes stop motion films, and her ceramics have been shown internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 3:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Collage and Creatures with Kate Slater<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Creating work using collage produces images with the appeal of layering and juxtaposition alongside the opportunity to use any material of your choice. Kate takes us through a number of commissioned collaged projects, focussing on some of the practical aspects of working this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an illustrator, Kate Slater <\/a>predominantly works in mixed media collage. She grew up on a farm in Staffordshire and studied illustration at Kingston University. She now works from her garden studio in Lichfield and her children\u2019s books include the What on Earth! First Big Book of How, <\/em>the Britannica First Big Book of Why, A Peek at Beaks <\/em>(Millbrook Press) and The Birthday Crown <\/em>(Royal Collection Trust). Amongst a range of other projects, Kate regularly illustrates for the National Wildlife Federation\u2019s Ranger Rick <\/em>magazine and has created several large-scale installations and window displays for clients, including the National Trust and the Bowes Museum. She also designs her own range of cards, wrapping paper and homeware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 4:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Talking Textiles & Fabricating Stories with C\u00e1it McEniff<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Forming artwork from textiles adds an element of tangibility and craft, creating textural artefacts that are effective when constructed with basic shapes or with more complex designs. C\u00e1it<\/a> describes how she first became interested in textiles and what inspired that, and talks about her process, covering personal work and a recently commissioned larger piece where her interest in research came to the fore.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u00e1it McEniff is an illustrator and textile artist based in Leeds. She is drawn to analogue approaches and her practice aims to celebrate the importance of work where the hand of the maker is visible. Her work is influenced by storytelling, craft and play. Indulging in ideas and celebrating curiosity, C\u00e1it is interested in research, environment, and the relationship between shape, pattern and simplification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
