An intrinsic element of games, illustration is used for visualising the world of a game and for the essential concept art and character creation. Artists also take on the challenge of creating their own games.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

AOI members have the exclusive opportunity to explore these aspects by watching the recordings of the four online sessions for the Illustration for Gaming Season Creative Practice Course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our presenters are illustrators highly experienced in the gaming industry, working across concept art, creating characters, art direction and fund raising and making their own games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Creative Practice Course is hosted by illustrator Dave Bain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each session gave members the opportunity to respond to one of two briefs set by the session illustrator. We encouraged members to make up to 3 rough ideas from the brief to bring along to the session where they were able to discuss their ideas with fellow illustrators in an informal setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 1:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Creating your own game: What to consider with Anna Hollinrake<\/a> co-founder of Electric Saint<\/a> studio<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

An award winning creative director, BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, and co-founder and Creative Director of her own indie studio Electric Saint, Anna Hollinrake has worked in game development as an artist and art director and as an animator. She worked as an Art Lead on Fall Guys<\/em>, building the Creative Services team from the ground up to support a 50 million player free-to-play-launch. In game development, Anna has worked as an artist and art director defining art styles on independent titles such as Lola and the Giant<\/em> and Arca’s Path VR, and creating concepts, UI and environments for much loved IPs such as Adventure Time<\/em> and Magic: The Gathering\u200b<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having been through the process with Electric Saint’s game Crescent County<\/em><\/a>, in this session, Anna goes through the elements you need to consider when thinking about, or actually starting to to make your own game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 2:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Building illustrative worlds with Tom Mead of Spiral Circus Games<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A 2D art director\/designer for games, animation and illustration, Tom Mead<\/a> is the creative director at Spiral Circus Games<\/a>. He loves to draw and paint the weird and wonderful. Celtic mythology and creatures from around where he grew up started his journey into art and it has become a life long obsession to be depicting his fascinations and fears through his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiral Circus Games are an indie games company formed with a passion for the strange and surreal. They strive to create odd and aesthetically satisfying titles with engaging narratives and unique gameplay. Their debut Silt <\/em>was chosen for the Nintendo Indie world showcase 2022, given the cover of Wireframe mag and was part of the London Games festival official selection 2022. Tom talks about creating the world of Silt <\/em>and how he approaches the important aspects of a game environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Session 3:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Narrative driven gameplay with Fred Hoffman<\/a> of Newfangled Games<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Paper Trail<\/em><\/a> is a top-down puzzle adventure about leaving home, set in a foldable, paper world with visuals created by illustrator Fred Hoffman who set up Newfangled Games with his brother, Henry Hoffman. As a digital illustrator, Fred is known in the print design community for his award-winning pattern, apparel and textile designs. Paper Trail<\/em> has met with widespread acclaim, winning numerous awards, including Best Art at Casual Connect USA. The game’s world draws on flat styles\u2014such as printmaking and watercolour\u2014to reinforce the paper theme, all led by Fred as Art Lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fred discusses how the imagery is an important element of a game’s story, helping to drive the narrative, and how he developed the visuals for Paper Trail.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concept Art: Crafting characters and assets with Ari Cervell\u00f3<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

2D Concept Artist, Visual Developer, and art director, Ari Cervell\u00f3<\/a> worked on the award winning games, Gris<\/em><\/a> and Neva<\/a> <\/em>for Nomada Studios. Neva<\/em> is the moving tale of a young woman and her lifelong bond with a magnificent wolf as they embark on a thrilling adventure through a rapidly dying world. Ari also works as a freelance illustrator as well as pursuing her own projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ari discusses her role in the crafting of a game and how she approaches creating effective characters and a whole range of assets for a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
