The platforms commercialising text-to-image generation emerged in 2022 and the issues surrounding them, including reproduction rights, continue to develop at a fast pace.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update 2025<\/strong>: AOI submitted a response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaoi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/AOI-Response-_-Copyright-and-AI-Consultation.pdf\">Copyright and Artificial Intelligence consultation<\/a> consultation in February, and encouraged creators to &#8216;Write to your MP&#8217; about the Consultation with this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativerightsinai.co.uk\/new-page\">template<\/a>. &#8216;The Creative Rights in AI Coalition template page finds your MP for you and allows you to send an email directly to them. You can add your own text as a creator or send the wording as it is.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This letter put together by illustrators to show your support could also be signed <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd_aXOaZH-H54ACPkylAfOXi6Syghy1LL_smxC7GGCQre6LVA\/viewform\">Objection to the Government&#8217;s Proposed Copyright Exemption for Generative AI Training<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of September 2025 the Government have yet to respond to the consultation (which received around 11,500 responses).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">AI image generation platforms are continually trained and improved using large data sets. These data sets are made up of a vast number of images scraped from the internet by trawling bots. Millions of images, including illustrations and animations, are currently being scraped without their creator\u2019s permission or knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The AOI believe that only data where the owner has given explicit permission should be used by AI for training. As creators, we each own the copyright in our work, therefore the unauthorised copying of images then used commercially within a dataset can be a copyright infringement. Your intellectual property is the most valuable thing that you own as a creator, and it should never be freely exploited without your consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Alongside the issue of copyright infringement, visual artists have concerns about the commercial application of AI-generated works undermining our existing working models. We are are closely observing the extent to which businesses and commissioners will utilise this technology, and how this may shape our industry moving forwards.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Many illustrators are keen to engage with new technologies, and some may wish to explore using AI in their own practices. We do not wish to hinder technological advancements or limit the creative communities\u2019 ability to utilise and benefit from AI. However, for these platforms to be used ethically, there needs to be a legal framework in place, that does not freely exploit the intellectual property of creators without permission or remuneration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For this reason, the AOI does not currently intend to promote AI-generated artwork and works&nbsp;produced using AI text-to-image generating software are not currently eligible to be entered into the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theaoi.com\/world-illustration-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Illustration Awards<\/a>. This will be reconsidered if the protection of the rights of artists is built into the business model of AI platforms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We are working alongside several other organisations, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-aop.org\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association of Photographers<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcopyright.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Copyright Council<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.european-illustrators-forum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Illustration Forum<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.creatorsrightsalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creators\u2019 Rights Alliance<\/a> to campaign against to use of copyrighted works in AI datasets and to amplify the voice of creatives in conversation with government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We aim to inform and help illustrators and animators navigate this changing landscape as it develops and to share different perspectives from within our community.
