DESCRIPTION:This special edition of Put Into Practice\, Bristol’s illustrators meet-up will be co-hosted by legendary Bristol illustrator\, freelance artist and award-winning comics creator\, Jayde Perkin. \nJayde is author of Mum’s Jumper and her beautiful work often explores themes of nature\, emotions\, mindfulness and grief – so expect some gentle and thoughtful drawing prompts along those lines throughout the session. \nWe’ll all meet at the main entrance on Bath Road\, then head into the grounds for a wander and draw. There’ll be time to sit\, draw\, reflect\, and chat\, and we’ll take a lunch break in the middle. There’s a cafe and toilets on site\, but feel free to bring along your own food\, drinks and snacks too. SUMMARY:Pictograms - Iconic Japanese Designs
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition demonstrates how the beauty and precision of Japanese design has shaped the art of visual communication. \nPictograms are everywhere. From street signs and text messages to toilet doors and maps\, they have transformed global travel\, removing barriers by creating a universal visual language. \nJapan has played an integral role in the development of pictograms. The renowned design agency Nippon Design Center set an early standard with the sporting pictograms they created for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games\, while people often unknowingly use a Japanese word – ‘emoji’ – to talk about digital pictograms. \nFrom ancient Egyptian tomb carvings to navigating contemporary Japan\, Pictograms traces the design\, evolution\, power and future potential of these universal signs. \nVisitors can create their own unique symbol from a selection of component pieces and move amongst giant pictograms – standing under a 2.5-metre torii shrine gate\, sizing up to a sumo wrestler or even taking the controls of a Japanese train. \nThe exhibition also offers the first chance to see selected pictograms designed by young people from the UK\, who were invited to represent ‘their London’ in graphic form. \nVisit Japan House London for a masterclass in the simplicity of communicating without words. \nJapan House London’s Pictograms exhibition is supported by Epson UK Ltd\, NTT Data Inc Group and Yamaha Music Europe GmbH. \nFREE – Booking recommended \nTo book or to find out more visit website or click here

DESCRIPTION:AOI Discusses continues with a session considering what’s beneficial for an ongoing career in illustration. \nWhether you’ve been working as an illustrator for a few years\, or are now into your mid career\, we can all benefit from considering our flexibility as an artist and how we maintain our interest and relevance over time. \nWe will be in conversation with illustrator and calligrapher\, Jill Calder and illustrator and comic artist Alé Mercado\, talking about what was successful initially for them when they started illustrating\, if they felt they settled into any ruts along the way and where they may have acknowledged a change in focus or expansion of skills would be useful. \nWe’ll also reserve time for questions from the audience\, so do join live to take advantage of this opportunity. \nOur Guest Speakers: \nJill Calder is an award winning illustrator and calligrapher who loves drawing\, ideas\, colour\, ink\, typography\, stories\, books\, dogs and deadlines. \nJill blends traditional and digital image-making methods creating whimsical illustrations with broad appeal. As a result\, her workhas been commissioned for children’s picture books\, hospital murals\, financial and scientific reports\, branding Scottish beer and whisky and global advertising campaigns. \nAlé Mercado is an illustrator and comic artist living in Ireland who was recently Highly Commended in the World Illustration Awards. He has created videos for Spanish musician José Ignacio Lapido and designed the poster for his 25th anniversary solo career concerts. \nSome of his other clients include Bank of Ireland\, Musgrave\, TBWA/Dublin\, Facebook\, Google\, Kilkenny County Council and Barnstorm Theatre Company. DESCRIPTION:67 York Street Gallery is proud to present a new solo exhibition by illustrator Molly Maine.  \nThis thought-provoking exhibition explores the concept of “home” within the context of contemporary Japan\, juxtaposing the transient lives of digital nomads with the country’s deep-rooted traditions. \nRecently ranked the world’s fastest-growing remote working hub\, Japan has introduced a digital nomad visa to attract remote workers and support local economies amid a declining\, ageing\npopulation. At the same time\, a new generation of Japanese people isvmoving beyond their hometowns\, significant in a society where generational ties to place have long been central. For others\, like evacuees from the Noto earthquake\, leaving home is not a choice but a necessity. \nA digital nomad for the past nine years\, Maine brings a personal lens to the exhibition. The series of illustrations was developed following her 2024 artist residency in Kanazawa\, during which she visited the earthquake-stricken Noto Peninsula. SUMMARY:LDC Online Comics Fair 2025
DESCRIPTION:LDComics is celebrating 15 years! \nIn 2009\, Dr Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman launched Laydeez Do Comics “to champion comics work based on life narrative and the drama of the everyday. Streeten and Lightman shared an interest in comics and graphic novels that were not about superheroes\, but were focused on the domestic and autobiographical.” \nSince then\, Laydeez Do Comics has turned into LDComics\, become a Community Interest Company\, hosted an annual festival from 2018-2020 in conjunction with a prize for graphic novels in progress\, set up a mentoring programme and residencies\, delivered an international British Council project and delivered workshops and talks. SUMMARY:The Art of Picture Book Illustration: 10 years of The Klaus Flugge Prize
DESCRIPTION:The Klaus Flugge Prize and the Association of Illustrators present an in-person evening of picture book conversation and insight with award-winning illustrators Mariajo Ilustrajo and Joseph Namara Hollis\, hosted by Burgh House in London. \nHear from Klaus Flugge Prize award winners Mariajo Ilustrajo and Joseph Namara Hollis as they discuss their work\, their path into illustration and what contributes to a successful picture book with AOI Publications & Membership Manager\, Derek Brazell. \nPut your questions to the panel about how to work with editors and art directors; the journey of a picture book and how to build a career as a picture book illustrator after the first book. \nThe venue is Burgh House\, Grade I listed Queen Anne house\, situated in the heart of Hampstead Village\, and a complimentary drink is included in the ticket price. \nAs an optional addition\, Burgh House staff have kindly offered take small groups on a guided tour of the current Helen Oxenbury exhibition before the talk commences at 6pm. The Guided tour will be avaialable from 4.30pm – 5.40pm for anyone who would like to participate.
