DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of National Illustration Day in November 2025\, our next AOI Discusses session will be a chance to chat to some of our 2024 featured illustrators about how they have balanced their work and creative practice\, in a challenging year for creatives. \nLaunched in 2023 by our friends The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration we’re looking forward to another day to uplift and share illustrators and illustration. now that the life of independent creatives isn’t always predictable\, especially in a fast paced age of social media\, technological growth and challenge. We’ve gathered a trio of illustrators who have harnessed their particular brand of work to forge their unique paths. We’ll be sharing what they have been working on over the past year since we last caught up\, challenges that they have had to navigate and what they’ve learned. \n \nOur Speakers \nEri Griffin is a Pen & Ink Illustrator\, based in Edinburgh\, Scotland. Eri creates minimalist pen and ink illustrations that capture movement\, emotion\, and the little details that tell a story. Her clients in the UK and US\, range across publishing\, music\, packaging\, and whisky and gin labels. Eri is currently developing a personal project called ‘Deepsea’\, exploring the mysteries of the ocean through a child’s eyes. \nSakina Saidi is a French-Moroccan illustrator and artist based in London\, and the founder of a small card publishing brand with cards sold in Oliver Bonas\, Waterstones\, and independent shops across the UK and beyond. Alongside her stationery work\, she collaborates on illustrated projects; from children’s books to campaigns for organisations such as Fairtrade\, Plan International UK\, Coppafeel!\, and Fine Acts. Rooted in connection and shared humanity\, her work celebrates everyday stories\, care\, and hope. \nJames Colmer is an artist and illustrator. An illustration graduate of Falmouth Art College\, he spent years combining illustration with Graphic Design and as a Creative Director before returning to his roots\, full-time as illustrator and painter. His passion for creating bold\, vibrant works\, deeply connected to the sea have led to diverse commissions\, include 20 artworks for the Victor Hugo Centre walking trails\, in Guernsey and creating art and the design for Lihou Island’s new museum and education centre\, blending storytelling with environmental education. DESCRIPTION:EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) came into force on 13th December 2024. Since then\, illustrators have found it increasingly challenging to understand and navigate this new regulation. This has had a direct impact on their businesses and in many cases illustrators have stopped shipping to the EU entirely. \nIn this comprehensive webinar\, we will focus on the ’practical elements’ of compliance i.e. exactly what you need to do\, how you need to do it\, giving you the confidence to quickly resume (and hopefully grow) your EU sales. This is an essential event for any illustrator that runs their own online shop and has been impacted by the new regulation. \nThe webinar is hosted by the Assocation of Illustrators and presented by Andrea Collins\, Founder of Global Trade Department (GTD)\, who also offer support in becoming compliant and can act as an Authorised Representative for sales to the EU.  \nThis webinar will be hosted online on Zoom\, accessible directly via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:LDC Online Comics Fair 2025
DESCRIPTION:LDComics is celebrating 15 years! \nIn 2009\, Dr Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman launched Laydeez Do Comics “to champion comics work based on life narrative and the drama of the everyday. Streeten and Lightman shared an interest in comics and graphic novels that were not about superheroes\, but were focused on the domestic and autobiographical.” \nSince then\, Laydeez Do Comics has turned into LDComics\, become a Community Interest Company\, hosted an annual festival from 2018-2020 in conjunction with a prize for graphic novels in progress\, set up a mentoring programme and residencies\, delivered an international British Council project and delivered workshops and talks. Most importantly\, they have continued to host monthly events hosting guests’ illustrated presentations\, welcoming everyone to attend free of charge. \nTo commemorate their fifteenth anniversary\, they’ll host an Online Comics Fair in July. \nFind out more information and see all exhibiting comics here. \n

In this AOI Discusses session we’ll be talking to illustrators who have utilised different options to fund projects\, find clients\, reward loyalty shopping and share exclusive works in a way suited to them. \nWe’ll be speaking to Fran Meneses AKA Frannerd and Andy J Pizza about how the utilise their creative skills on platforms like Patreon\, Substack etc\, to build and communicate with their audience\, find clients\, share exclusive content or even fund projects\, in a way suited to them. \nOur Guest Speakers: \nAndy J Pizza \nThe New York Times Bestselling author-illustrator of many books for children and adults such as “Invisible Things” and “A Pizza with Everything On It”. \nHe is also the creator of the popular and riveting podcast Creative Pep Talk.
